Ginger Tea Relief for Sore Throat – Easy Instant Pot Method

Smoothing ginger tea for sore throat relief, made easy in the Instant Pot. A Holistic nutritionist’s go-to remedy for smoke, allergies, colds and coughs.

I live in Colorado, high in the Rockies, and the last few weeks of summer, the wind has been relentless — smoke rolling in from fires in Utah and Colorado, pollen season in full swing, and not a drop of rain to settle either one down. I didn’t even know I had seasonal allergies until last week. It started after a ride on Deer Creek — my body reacted, and two days later the smoke moved in. Then, over the Fourth of July weekend, a social day at the local museum followed by the famous (and beautiful) 401 trail. That combination took my voice away with the smoke and pollen in the air.

Ever since, I’ve been sipping ginger tea to get my voice — and my energy — back. I make a big batch in the Instant Pot so it lasts me all day, because between resting and catching the World Cup, the last thing I want to do is keep boiling more tea every hour. Give it a try!

Why You’ll Love This Recipe

  • Makes 8-10 cups at once — brew it in the morning, sip all day
  • Just 2 real ingredients: fresh ginger and water
  • Ready in under 45 minutes, mostly hands-off
  • Gentle enough for kids, potent enough for adults
  • No special equipment beyond an Instant Pot (stovetop option below)

Why Ginger, Why Now?

Ginger has natural antiviral and anti-inflammatory properties that help your body fight off the viruses behind upper respiratory infections. It also shrinks nasal swelling and soothes a sore, scratchy throat — exactly what I need when smoke and pollen have me down. I prefer fresh ginger root for this tea; dried will work in a pinch, but fresh gives you the strongest relief and the best flavor. This recipe is based on fresh. If using dry try 1/2 tsp dried ginger for 1 1/2 cup (375ml) of water.

This is also very effective for winter cold and cough season to soothe your throat. I’m sipping it right now as I type!

This tea is safe and effective for anyone over the age of two. For little ones ages 1-12, offer ÂĽ to ½ cup, 1 to 3 times a day. If you’re an adult, sip it freely all day long.

And if you want to keep it as simple as possible, you don’t need the honey or lemon at all — plain ginger tea, just the root and water, works beautifully on its own. The honey and lemon are there for flavor and additional nutrients, not necessity.

Ingredient Notes

Fresh ginger root — look for firm, smooth-skinned pieces at the store. You can peel it or leave the skin on; both work.

Raw honey — adds a touch of sweetness and its own soothing properties, reducing inflammation, thinning out mucus and helping coat the throat to suppress coughing.

Lemon — fresh-squeezed brightens the flavor and adds vitamin C.

Instant Pot — this is what makes an 8-10 cup batch realistic for a busy day.

FAQ

Q. Can I make this without an Instant Pot?

A. Yes — simmer the sliced ginger in water on the stovetop, covered, for 15-20 minutes, then steep off heat for another 10. I find the longer covered time the more intense the ginger water.

Q. Is this safe for kids?

A. Yes, for children over age two. Offer ¼ to ½ cup, 1-3 times a day for ages 1-12.

Q. How long does it keep?

A. Best enjoyed within 2 days. Leave the ginger root right in the water — when you’re ready for more, top up to 8 cups and bring back to a boil (6-8 minutes high pressure, 15 minutes natural release).

Q. Can I use dried ginger instead of fresh?**

A. Yes, though fresh ginger gives a stronger, more soothing effect and better flavor.

Q. Will this help with more than just a sore throat?**

A. Yes — it also helps calm nasal swelling and general upper respiratory irritation from smoke, allergies, or a cold.

A Holistic Nutrition Tip

When air quality drops — smoke or heavy pollen — your body works overtime filtering what you’re breathing. Staying hydrated helps flush out irritants and keeps your throat from drying out further. Warm fluids like this tea do double duty: they hydrate while ginger’s compounds calm the inflammation driving that raw, swollen feeling — which is what actually shortens the irritation, not just masks it. Keep a batch on hand during smoke season and sip steadily, before your throat gets sore.

ADDED THROAT RELIEF!

Hydration and calming inflammation are the foundation — everything else is just support on top. Gargling salt water was a must for me, and neti-pot rinse of my nasals during the pollen and smoke for nasal symptom release. I ran a Vicks 1-gallon cool mist humidifier every night to keep things from drying out further while I slept. I also kept WishGarden Herbs’ Kick Ass Throat Spray on hand for scratchy-throat relief — great tip for speakers, use it right before you go on stage. For lozenges: regular Fisherman’s Friend, plus Nature’s Way Sambucus Immune Elderberry with Zinc for extra vitamin C and immune support.
